December 4, 1929 - August 2, 2012 Resided in Woodbridge, CT
In the presence of loving friends, Robert Hirata entered into eternal peace after bravely and gracefully facing a diagnosis of cancer 6 months ago. Bob was born in New Haven on December 4, 1929. After attending New Haven public schools, Bob earned a BA in English from Yale University and a MA in English from Brown University. Following his college years, Bob served his country as an officer in the U.S. Navy until 1957. After his service, Bob studied architectural design but ultimately became a teacher of mathematics at Hamden Hall and then at Hamden High School until his retirement. An artist at heart, Bob was a long time member of the New Haven Ballet community where he took class, volunteered, and performed for years, most notably in yearly productions of "The Nutcracker" at the Shubert Theater. Bob's final performance was this past December. Bob was a lover of classical music, regularly attending concerts. The sound of classical music was also ever-present in his home. An avid reader, there was not a piece of literature that could be mentioned without Bob adding insightful commentary. Bob is predeceased by his mother and father, Misao and Isao Hirata and his sister and brother, Florence and Isao, Jr. He is survived by his niece, Kathy Chin, and nephew, William Hirata, as well as a host of loving friends and neighbors and his dog, Sara.
A service for Bob will be held Monday August 6, 2012 at 12 pm at the IOVANNE FUNERAL HOME, INC. 11 Wooster Pl. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob's name may be made to the New Haven Ballet, 70 Audubon Street, New Haven, CT 06510.
